Thunder were back to near full strength
for the visit of Peterborough Islanders on Sunday, and with the U18s available,
they were able to give young Connor Goode his debut in senior hockey.Having had
a bruising encounter only the week before in Peterborough, Thunder were looking
to use their speed and the larger MK ice pad to full advantage and nullify
Islanders physical game.
Against the run of play, it was
Islanders who opened the scoring when Perkins hacked the puck between Mark
Woolf’s pad and the post to make it 0-1. Thunder rolled all four lines with the
young fourth line of Harrison Goode, Martyn Snape, and Connor Goode proving
particularly difficult for Islanders to cope with. Jacob Heron levelled the
score at 15:06 assisted by Mitch Starkey and Mike Knights, and from that point
on, Thunder took complete control pressing Islanders into long periods of
desperate defence. Harrison Goode made it 2-1 at 17:33, when he finished off a
great move involving both Martyn Snape and Connor Goode, and fourteen seconds
later Dan Chaplen made it 3-1 assists going to Paul Jamieson and Sam Fairhurst.
The second period followed a similar
pattern with Thunder Pressing and Islanders trying to hit on the break but
neither team added to the goal tally.
Thunder upped the level of intensity in
the final period and dominated the visitors, scoring five unanswered goals.
Jacob Heron made it 4-1 shortly after the restart, quickly followed by a Mike
Knights goal at 42:57, a one timer from the blue line from a pass by Sam
Fairhurst. Keiron Goody getting the second assist. A quick bout of fisticuffs
followed as Connor Hubbuck faced up to Islanders self proclaimed hard man Leon
Groom, a bout that didn’t last long as both players quickly fell to the ice and
received 2+2 for their efforts. Dan Chaplen scored Thunder’s sixth mid period
assisted by Mike Knights, and it was Knightsy on hand again at 58:20 make the
pass to Clint Herring who finished form a narrow angle to make it 7-1. Thunder’s
final goal started right at the back as Mark Woolf made the pass up the ice to
Clint Herring who in turn got the puck to Connor Hubbuck who fired past
Bainborough in Islanders goal at 59:46 to wrap the game up.
Overall this was a fine Thunder team
performance, with all players contributing fully for the whole game. A special
mention must go to the U18s who played, Connor Goode had an excellent debut and
deserved his man of the match, Jacob Heron who scored two and proved a handful
to Peterborough all night, and Mitch Starkey who got an assist and looked solid
and mature in defence.
