Man of the
Match: Mike Knights
After their
narrow 2-1 cup win over Barons, Thunder knew they would have to be on top of
their game to take the league points from their midlands rivals. However it was
Barons’ netminder Ricky Young who proved to be on top of his game for large
parts of this game, keeping out just about everything Thunder could throw at him
for two periods. It was Barons who got on the score sheet first when, in the
third minute Richard Taylor found a way past Sutton in the Thunder goal. Despite
out-shooting Barons by three to one, it took Thunder until 11:21 to beat the
impressive Young when Mike Knights scored from long range on a powerplay.
At 1-1 at
the end of the first, it looked like another of those close nail biting games
and the second period did nothing to calm the nerves for Thunder supporters as
Baron’s confidence grew and Thunder failed to really get into the game. A 0-0
period was fair and didn’t give any clues as to what would happen in the final
period.
Thunder suddenly ‘switched on’ for the last twenty minutes and pummelled the
Barons goal with 34 shots with only 7 in reply. At the midway point, the score
was 3-3 with Knights and Josh White providing the Thunder goals and Winwood and
Lee the visitors goals to equalise. Thunder then blasted four goals in four
minutes to eventually stamp their authority on the game, a hat-trick goal from
Knights, and one each for James Roberts, Ivan Turan and Tom Hurley saw the home
side cruise to a convincing victory.
